The spinnaker is the first sail designed specifically by and for pleasure boating. Born in the 19th century, it has continued to develop and has taken on various forms. This sail was primarily used for downwind sailing, then gradually it was used at increasingly tight angles.

The origin of the word "spinnaker" is not established with certainty. Some believe that it comes from the name "Sphinx", pronounced spinx, a sailboat which, when racing, would have deployed a downwind sail estimated at one acre (4,000 square meters), transforming the name into "Sphinx's acre", pronounced "Spinxaquer". Others attach themselves to the old nautical term "speen" and finally, there are those who speak of the invention of the spinnaker and their distrust of its stability. They would have said "It's going to make her spin" (this will capsize the boat, hence spinmaker, then spinnaker.
