As a rig, a yawl is a two-masted sailing vessel, rigged fore and aft, with the mizzenmast set aft (behind) the rudder stock, or in some cases, very close to the rudder stock . It is different from a ketch, where the mizzenmast is set forward of the rudder stock. As many sailors know, the mizzen of a yawl can be set to steer itself: set it to the desired wind angle and if the boat drifts off course, the mizzen catches the wind and pushes the stern back to where it should be. This inherent feature frees the skipper for other tasks on the boat , a necessity for single-handed sailing.

Classic sailboat and its bowsprit

Marine illustration on glossy paper to frame Format 20 X 25

The bowsprit, formerly called Dolon, is a so-called major mast (key of mast) of a ship. It is located at the bow (forward) of the ship and is inclined forward, it is located above the stem. Intended to advance the center of sail, it supports the tacks of the jibs, clinfocs and flying jibs. Often reinforced in the lower part by one or under barbs, resisting the efforts of the stays of the foremast. It made it possible to compensate for a weakness in the length of old sailing ships and could even carry in the 17th and 18th centuries a materiel and a square sail in the lower part called a livarde. It was extended by a jib stick, itself sometimes extended by a jib clinker stick. The bowsprit had the same diameter as the mainmast, but a third of its length.

This marine illustration perfectly evokes the nostalgia for a bygone era of these sailing ships,

Marine illustration in 20 X 25 format on photo paper to frame

The spinnaker is the first sail designed specifically by and for pleasure boating. Born in the 19th century, it has continued to develop and has taken on various forms. This sail was primarily used for downwind sailing, then gradually it was used at increasingly tight angles.

The origin of the word "spinnaker" is not established with certainty. Some believe that it comes from the name "Sphinx", pronounced spinx, a sailboat which, when racing, would have deployed a downwind sail estimated at one acre (4,000 square meters), transforming the name into "Sphinx's acre", pronounced "Spinxaquer". Others attach themselves to the old nautical term "speen" and finally, there are those who speak of the invention of the spinnaker and their distrust of its stability. They would have said "It's going to make her spin" (this will capsize the boat, hence spinmaker, then spinnaker.

Phocea, originally named Club Mediteranee, is a solo transatlantic racing boat built by the navigator Alain Colas. It took the name Vie Claire when it was bought by Bernard Tapie in 1982, who transformed it again to call it Phocea in Marseille. It was then bought by Mouna Ayoub in 1999. She sold it in 2010 to Xavier Niel associated with the brothers Jean Emile and Steve Rosenblum. The ship sank in Malaysia on February 18, 2021. Phocea was the largest sailing yacht in the world until 2004, replaced by Athena in 2004.
