Étoile and Belle Poule are two sister ships, that is to say two identical sailing ships. Étoile bears the number A649 and Belle Poule A650. Ordered for the French Navy, they were built in 1932 by the Normandy shipyards in Fécamp. Their plans reproduce those of the Paimpolaise type schooners which fished for cod on the Icelandic banks.
