As a rig, a yawl is a two-masted sailing vessel, rigged fore and aft, with the mizzenmast set aft (behind) the rudder stock, or in some cases, very close to the rudder stock . It is different from a ketch, where the mizzenmast is set forward of the rudder stock. As many sailors know, the mizzen of a yawl can be set to steer itself: set it to the desired wind angle and if the boat drifts off course, the mizzen catches the wind and pushes the stern back to where it should be. This inherent feature frees the skipper for other tasks on the boat , a necessity for single-handed sailing.
